BUTEYKO BREATHING TRAINING (Practioner: Julie York)
The Buteyko Technique is a method of breathing retraining, designed to restore normal breathing rate and depth. Just as there are accepted norms for temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate etc., so there is an accepted norm for breathing.
Dysfunctional breathing resulting in hyperventilation may lead to alveolar and airway hypocapnia which can result in a wide range of chronic ailments. Among these are:
| Allergies that affect the Respiratory function (sinusitis, Rhinitis etc) | Dizziness or headaches |
| Anxiety/Panic disorder | Eczema and other skin problems |
| Asthma and other respiratory problems | Excessive tiredness |
| Breathlessness | High blood pressure |
| Dental and orthodontic problems | Hyperventilation |
| Digestive disorders | Sleep Apnoea |
| Disturbed sleep patterns | Snoring |
Mouth breathing can lead to orthodontic problems (narrowing of the top jaw) as well as other problems, such as lack of oxygen and poor sleeping habits. This leaves the mouth breather prone to daytime fatigue, headaches and an inability to concentrate in school.
People who are mouth breathers will often have chapped lips and typically the line separating the inner lining of the lip and the outside lining, known as the vermilion border, will be visible. Also mouth breathers in profile tend to have very weak chins and elongated faces. Typically these individuals will suffer from chronic sinusitis or sinus infections, colds, respiratory problems and lung-related issues.
Typically children with bags under their eyes have short attention spans because they do not have efficient circulation and oxygenation of the head and can tire easily.
The Buteyko Breathing Method program is based on addressing the cause of the problem, rather than treating the symptoms. It is taught over five to ten consecutive sessions of two hours each, followed by 12 months of free-of-charge on-going access to refresher courses and contact with the practitioner for advice on on-going health issues.
The Buteyko Technique has now been recognised and accepted as a safe, non-invasive and effective way to manage a wide range of chronic disorders.
Workshops are held regularly during the evenings and during the day in school holidays. Bookings are essential as class numbers are small and are often booked out well in advance.
